FSEMS Profile
“Learn Daily, Live Responsibly” is the Fred S. Engle Middle School motto. Engle Middle School serves about 850 students in grades 7 and 8, and employs about 90 faculty and staff members. The mission of Engle Middle School is to ensure all students achieve their personal best and successfully complete the transition from the intermediate school to high school. This is accomplished by creating a welcoming, inclusive environment, offering a challenging, developmentally appropriate curriculum, and utilizing effective instructional strategies. Seventh and eighth grade students start their middle school experience on a positive note by participating in a “Meet the Middle School,” a night where parents and students are invited to tour the building and meet their team of teachers. This activity is designed to help them become acclimated to Engle and the secondary experience. At the heart of our school community is team teaching where all students are members of an instructional team that includes an English, math, science and social studies teacher. Each team is responsible for the academic and social success of all its students. The teachers strive to provide a variety of instructional methods to meet the educational needs of our students. The flexibility of scheduling allows the team teachers to utilize time more effectively in providing instruction.
Curriculum
Our curriculum is enriched with special programs on all grade levels. Seventh graders enjoy a variety of educational field trips which include the Hedgerow Theater for a Christmas Carol and the Brandywine Valley Association (BVA) for an interdisciplinary outdoor education program. Eighth graders may tour Old City Philadelphia and the Constitution Center. In addition to the curricular opportunities, there are opportunities for personal expression through our art cycle classes (art, technology, computers, Spanish, French, music and family and consumer science), Engle also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities and sports teams. Engle offers an academically talented program and an instructional support team to assist students in reaching their academic potential. Engle also provides guidance and counseling services to students and families.
Engle is proud of all of our students who perform well in academics and also participate in a wide variety of co-curricular programs and extracurricular activities. Students are rewarded for outstanding efforts through positive behavior notices and Student of the Month designations and “AG Pride” assemblies throughout the school year. An end-of-year assembly program recognizes students for their achievements.
Communication
Parent and community communication is of critical importance at Engle. All parents receive our weekly electronic newsletter highlighting important events and happenings. Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is committed to working cooperatively with the administration to improve all aspects of our school. PTO communication comes monthly after the FSEMS Notes.
