Avon Grove Intermediate School Profile

Avon Grove Intermediate School serves students in third through sixth grade for the entirety of the Avon Grove School District. The building is certainly a sight to behold! Each grade level is housed in its own wing toward the rear of the building. Upon entering a grade level wing, you will find two floors of classrooms flanking a “centrum”, or large group instructional space, where regular education, special education, and ESL services all take place. You will also find instruction taking place in our outstanding art rooms, music rooms, library, gymnasium, or what we affectionately refer to as classrooms on “the street”. “The street”, which is located along the main hallway downstairs, houses smaller classrooms designed for targeted, small group instruction to meet the varied needs of our students. Each classroom throughout the building is equipped with an interactive projector system, access to mobile computer labs, as well as access to common area computer stations giving students added technology resources. Our library/media center offers multiple resources for student research both with print materials and mobile technology as well.

To personalize the grade level experience for each of our students, teachers work in two-person teams and students spend most of their day with these two teachers. One of the teachers teaches math and science while the other teacher teaches language arts and social studies. The students travel to each of these classes as a homeroom group throughout the day. To round out the educational experience, students also have a “WIN”, or “What I Need” period and an Encore period. Encore offerings include health/PE, art, music, guidance, and technology. The student day is composed of 90 minutes for math, 90 minutes for language arts, 45 minutes each for science and social studies, 40 minutes each for WIN and Encore, and 40 minutes for a lunch/recess block. Instruction throughout the day is differentiated to meet the needs of all of our students.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is fully aligned to the PA Core Standards and focuses on the areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Our core curriculum materials and instructional models provide differentiated opportunities that address the multiple learning styles of our students and provide the required instruction on those standards.

Teachers regularly assess students using district-created common assessments and standardized benchmark assessments in order to plan for, and implement, effective instruction that best meets the needs of all learners. The analyzing of assessment data ensures that students are provided the opportunity to extend their learning or to receive additional intervention strategies in order to master the learning targets.
