Winter Sports Assembly

The Winter Sports Assembly is being held on February 25, beginning at 7:50. This assembly recognizes the accomplishments of the students and coaches from the winter athletic season. Parents are welcome to attend.
Student/Faculty Basketball Fundraiser Game
January 30, 2009
February 27, 2009 – The student/faculty basketball game is the largest fundraiser for the year. The doors open at 5:30 for the basket auction and the game begins at 6:45. Please come out and be a part of a fun evening that will directly benefit the students of Fred S. Engle Middle School.
School Play
January 30, 2009
Mulan will be the school play this year. Show dates are March 6 and 7. Performances will held at Avon Grove High School in the auditorium.
Spelling Bee
January 30, 2009
The Middle School Spelling Bee will take place on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. We have 34 students competing in our school-wide spelling bee. These students were chosen as representatives from each Language Arts class through either a spelling test or classroom spelling bee. The winner of the school-wide bee will go on to represent Fred S. Engle at the Chester County Competition next month.
PSSA Writing Exam

The PSSA writing exam will be administered the week of February 9th to all 8th grade students.
4Sight Testing
January 30, 2009
8th grade students are currently taking the Measures of Academic Performance assessment, and the entire school is taking the 3rd 4Sight assessment the week of 2/17/09.
Student/Faculty Basketball Fundraiser Game

Mark your calendars! Thursday, February 26, 2009, is the 6th annual Fred S. Engle Student/Faculty Basketball Fundraiser Game. The 8th grade girls and boys basketball teams hope to begin a new winning streak after suffering their first defeat in two years on a last second shot. Tickets are only $3, and they go on sale at the middle school beginning Tuesday, February 17.

AGSD Board of School Directors to Consider Options to Balance 2009-2010 Budget
The Avon Grove School District Board of School Directors is scheduled to consider a resolution at the Jan. 22 Board meeting to opt out of the accelerated budget cycle set forth by Special Session Act 1 of 2006 and to certify that the District’s 2009-2010 real estate tax rate would be set within the allowable index limit of 5.4 percent. The District Administration and the Board are considering options to balance the projected budget for 2009-2010. A combination of initiatives that include reducing expenditures, increasing the real estate tax rate, and using a portion of the general fund balance will likely be necessary. January Teacher In-Service Day

Please note that the January 28th Teacher In-service Day listed on the District calendar is tentative. As part of the teachers’ contract, this in-service day is held each year the day after the 91st day classes are in session.
Latino & Hispanic Parent Night / Noche de Padres Latinos & Hispanos: Wednesday, 1/21/09 from 6:30-7:30PM

Latino and Hispanic parents and students: Come out and join us for an informational night and learn about the high school course registration process and the new Chester County Technical College High School (CCTCHS). Families will also have the opportunity to learn about and access various bilingual websites. Snacks and babysitting will be provided!
Padres y estudiantes Latinos: Acompáñenos durante esta velada informacional para entender el proceso de registración para el colegio superior (High School) y el nuevo colegio superior técnico (Chester County Technical College High School, CCTCHS.) Familias tendrán la oportunidad de conocer y usar varios sitios web bilingües. Se proveerán tentempiés ligeros y también un guardaniños.
8th Grade Open House

Avon Grove High School will be holding an open house for all incoming 8th grade students on Wednesday, January 21st. The open house will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Faculty members will be discussing course offerings at the high school. Parents and students will be given the opportunity to tour the building and speak with clubs and sports teams. Refreshments will be provided in the cafeteria.
New Immunization Requirements for Incoming 7th Grade Students

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has changed the immunization requirements for children entering 7th grade in 2009-2010 school year. Since your child must be in compliance with these requirements in order to enter the 7th grade, the nurse’s office would like to urge you to make an appointment with your child’s doctor to receive these shots as soon as possible.
