The PTO Needs YOU!

March 1, 2010

It’s already time to elect officers for next year’s PTO, as well as start filling chair and co-chair persons for various committees so that we can “hit the ground running” at the beginning of the next school year!   We need volunteers for Vice-President as well as committees such as Book Fairs, Restaurant Coupon Sales, Boxtops, Basketball Fundraiser, Reading Incentives, College Spirit Wear, Book Covers, and more.  If you would like more information click here or contact Teresa Hanrahan at 610-255-3792 or hanrahan@comcast.net.

Hershey Park Tickets at a Discount!

March 5-26, 2010

Hershey Park ticket orders will be taken from March 5th until March 26th.  The tickets are being offered at the group rate which is a substantial savings off of the regular admission price!  Click here for order form.

Spring Book Fair – Get Your Student’s Summer Reading Books!

March 22-25, 2010

Mark your calendars now for the upcoming Spring Book Fair to be held Monday, March 22nd through Thursday, March 25th. The fair will be open during all conference times for parents and students will be able to shop during one of their language arts classes during the week. We expect to offer another great selection of books, so you can stock up for summer reading. And if the student body purchases at least 425 books, Mr. Snopkowski has agreed to dress up in the costume of the students’ choice!

Loose Change Challenge for Haiti

March 22-25, 2010

During the week of the Spring Book Fair, we will be collecting any loose change that the students (and their parents!) wish to donate. All coins collected will be used to buy books that we will send to Haiti, and Scholastic Books will match that amount in a donation of books to a literacy charity program. There will be a collection jar in the cafeteria and another one at the Book Fair. Please, make your coins count and send in your loose change!

Meetings

All parents of Fred S. Engle students are automatically PTO members. Parental involvement is key to a child’s success. Research reports, however, show that for most parents the urge to volunteer ends when their child enters middle school. That is just when the children need it most! Our monthly meetings are held at the school in Conference Room A, and times are listed below. Please come out and share your ideas and/or concerns. We look forward to meeting you!

Programs

Basketball Fundraiser

You won’t want to miss this entertaining evening of basketball with the FSE Faculty taking on the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams!  This fun event is sponsored jointly by the FSE faculty and the PTO.  This is the largest fundraiser for the student activities fund, which is used to support student programs.

Bring your families to enjoy this exciting event on Thursday, March 4th.  Doors open at 5:30 and the game begins at 6:45.  Tickets are $3 and will be sold during 8th period the week of the event, as well as at the door.

Concessions will be offered both before and during the game.  We will have pizza, hot dogs, pretzels, chips and baked goods.

In addition to the game, wonderful themed classroom baskets will be raffled.  Chances are .50 each or 12 for $5.  T-shirts will also available for $5.

You should already have information about your student’s homeroom basket theme with a request for donations.  If not, be sure to ask your student or call the PTO chair below.

Parent Volunteers are needed to help with the basket preview days (24th & 25th) for the students, as well as helping with the baskets and concessions the night of the event.   Also, if you are interested in placing an ad in the basketball program contact Michelle Neils at mnmneils@aol.com.   For more information or to volunteer contact Jennifer Martin at 610-345-9145 (martin626@verizon.net).

Book Fair

We host a Scholastic Book Fair in the fall and spring as a great way to get everyone excited about reading.  This is also a minor fundraiser for us as well.  Each student has an opportunity to shop during one of their language arts classes and parents are able to do some shopping during parent/teacher conferences.

Boxtops for Education

The PTO coordinates the General Mills Boxtops for Education program for the school. We collect the Boxtop cutouts which are located on such products as Pillsbury, Hefty, Ziploc, Kimberly Clark Products and of course General Mills cereal boxes. They in turn reimburse us 10 cents for each cutout. While this doesn’t sound like much, it adds up! In the 2008/2009 school year, we made over $900!It’s an easy and free way to help out the school!

If you shop online, the Boxtops program also offers reimbursements to the school for your purchases. You must first go to BTFE.com to register. Up to 8% of each qualifying purchase is donated to our school!

Entertainment Books

We sell Entertainment Books as a great way for parents to save money at the various stores they shop at, as well as being a minor fundraiser for us. There are coupons for fast food, restaurants, stores like Kohls, Dicks, Aeropostale and Borders, as well as many entertainment and sports venues like Boomers, movie tickets, golf courses and ski resorts. Click here for the complete list of retailers.

Hershey Park Tickets

We sell discounted tickets to Hershey Park in the spring as a cost savings opportunity for the parents. Look for more information on our web page coming out in March.

Luncheons

We host a Holiday Teacher Luncheon in December and a Staff Appreciation Luncheon in the spring as our way of showing the staff how much we appreciate all that they do!  Homemade dishes and goodies are sent in from the parents.

Reading Incentives

The PTO supports the FSE reading goals by providing incentives for those students who reach their goal each marking period. We provide soft pretzels and bottled water to these students and enter each one in a drawing for various rewards at the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd marking periods. For the 4th marking period, we provide an ice cream party.

Restaurant Coupon Sale

In the fall we have our major fundraiser of the year selling restaurant coupons. The parents buy the coupons, good at several local establishments, and use them for full value as if they were cash. The restaurants agree to only partial reimbursement of the coupons from the PTO, thus providing our profit. The top-selling homeroom from each grade gets some type of party, and top-selling students also get some type of reward.
