FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

Welcome to the Fred S. Engle Middle School web site. Engle is a place where all stakeholders, including approximately 900 students, over 100 faculty and staff members, parents, and community members are truly committed to excellence.

Learning is not a spectator sport, and consistent with that mindset our teachers ensure that our students are actively engaged in pursuits of learning on a daily basis. Students’ learning inquiries allow them to construct meaning around the big ideas and enduring understandings that will enable them to maintain their learnings for the long term and connect these learnings to the larger world, as one of our fundamental obligations as a school community is to prepare students to become viable members of an increasingly global society.

Assisting in our learning quests is a library equipped with well over 25,000 books, which allows us to offer 29 books per student of a wide variety of genres. Our school also offers a student to computer ratio of 2.2:1. Our technological resources include six mobile computer labs, four of which have 30 laptops and two of which have 15 laptops. Furthermore, each of our classrooms is equipped with an LCD projector and an accompanying laptop computer. Additionally, our school has a total of 19 SMARTBoards, including two for each core team.

The implementation of such resources by our committed, focused, and determined faculty and staff, while working in partnership with an energetic and involved PTO, general parental base and community at large, have allowed our hard-working students to achieve impressive results on state standardized tests. Over the past three years, for instance, our average Reading scores have been 14.3% above the state average, while our average Math scores have been 17.7% above the state average. In addition, we are proud of the number of our students earning Advanced scores on these assessments. In Reading, for instance, our Advanced scores over the past three years have been 19.1% above the state average. In 2007, this score was 20.1% above the state average. In Math, our Advanced scores over the past three years have been 24.6% above the state average. In 2007, this score was 30.5% above the state average.

We are especially proud of the fact that we have collectively accomplished these results while continuing to offer a curricular program geared toward addressing holistic adolescent needs. As such, our students participate in Physical Education/Health every day of the school year. Additionally, we offer a full assortment of exploratory courses (Art, Music, Technology Education, Computer Education, Family and Consumer Science, Exploratory Spanish, and Exploratory French) to all of our students. This approach allows our middle school students to consider their options from a variety of perspectives before making a more definitive commitment to a career pathway in high school. Finally, to round out the educational experience, we offer a total of 13 intramural athletic activities, 13 interscholastic athletic activities, and 15 non-athletic co-curricular/extracurricular activities.

I encourage you to navigate through our web site to learn more about our school. Enjoy your virtual visit!

Best regards,

Robert J. Fraser, Ed. D.
