Curriculum

The Office of Elementary Teaching and Learning is responsible for aligning and revising the curricular and instructional practices that support the district strategic plan to meet the needs of all learners.

During the elementary school years, students will spend their time in core learning in ELA, math, social studies and science, along with exploratory options through an encore cycle which includes: art, guidance, access to the library media center, music, physical education/health, and technology.

This curriculum focus provides support for all programs based on our district mission and Pennsylvania academic standards.

Assessment

Elementary students in the Avon Grove School District participate in a comprehensive assessment program that provides important information to teachers, students and parents regarding the progress of all students toward their learning goals and targets. Combining local assessments, state assessments (PSSA,WIDA, etc.), and national assessments (MAP, etc.), teachers and administrators work together to analyze student performance and develop action steps to help all students reach their potential.

Professional Development

Teaching and learning in Avon Grove uses the Gradual Release of Responsibility as its core instructional framework. This framework includes teacher modeling, student collaboration, extensive feedback for learning and supported practice of students as they progress toward independent learning. Teachers utilize a variety of modes of professional learning (direct, blended, and online formats, as well as local and regional workshops) to best understand the research-based practices that will have the greatest effect on student learning, and how these can be implemented in each classroom.
