Parent & Student Resources

The PSAT/NMSQT Helps Students:

    • Prepare for the SAT. The PSAT/NMSQT and SAT measure the same skills and have the same format, directions and question types. On average, students who take the PSAT/NMSQT earn higher scores on the SAT than those who do not.

    • Enter Scholarship and Recognition Programs. High school students who take the test (in their junior year) may be eligible to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s competitions for recognition and scholarships. High-achieving Hispanic and African-American high school juniors may also enter other programs that give special recognition.

    • Plan for College and Careers. Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT receive free access to My College QuickStart, a personalized online college planning kit, and MyRoad, a comprehensive major and career exploration tool that includes a personality profiler to help students find programs that fit their interests. Learn more at www.collegeboard.com/quickstart.

    • Receive Information from Colleges. Through the Student Search Service, PSAT/NMSQT participants can receive free admissions and financial aid information from colleges, universities and scholarship programs. The materials students receive help them start thinking about and exploring higher education opportunities.

    • Improve Skills. The PSAT/NMSQT Score Report Plus gives students comprehensive personalized feedback on their test performance, allowing them to see which questions they answered incorrectly and which academic skills they should work to improve.

SAT & SAT Subject Tests

The SAT and SAT Subject Tests are a suite of tools designed to assess a student's academic readiness for college. These exams can provide a path to opportunities, financial support, and scholarships.

The SAT tests students in reading, writing and mathematics.

    • The reading section includes reading passages and sentence completions.
    • The writing section includes a short essay and multiple-choice questions on identifying errors and improving grammar and usage.
    • The mathematics section includes questions on arithmetic operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability.

SAT Subject Tests are hour-long, content-based tests that allow students to showcase achievement in specific subject areas where they may excel. These are the only national admission tests where students choose to take tests in subjects that best showcase their achievements and interests.

According to the College Board, SAT Subject Tests allow students to differentiate themselves in the college admission process or send a strong message regarding readiness to study specific majors or programs in college. In conjunction with other admission credentials (high school record, SAT scores, teacher recommendations, etc.), they provide a more complete picture of a student's academic background and interests.

Students are encouraged to check with their college(s) of choice well in advance to find out more about admissions and testing requirements.

Students must register online in advance to take the SAT as well as SAT Subject Tests.
