School Board Adopts Resolution Supporting
HB940 and Changes to Cyber School Funding
The Avon Grove Board of School Directors approved a resolution on June 10 supporting HB940, which calls for ammending the Public School code to bring school district funding of cyber charter schools in line with acutal costs. >> More.

School Board Approves Final Budget June 10
The Board of School Directors approved the 2010-2011 Final Budget on June 10. The tax rate has been set at 24.72 mills. The budget is available for public inspection. For more information, see the May 2010 Special Budget Edition of The Grove newsletter. Tax bills will mail out on July 1, 2010.

Board of School Directors Adopts CCIU Policy
On June 10, 2010, the Avon Grove Board of School Directors approved a Notice of Adoption of the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s Policies, Procedures and the Use of Funds, for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act – Part B funding for 2010-2011, as required by federal and Pennsylvania Department of Education regulations.

AGSD Website Earns Award for Transparency

The editors of Sunshine Review gave a “Sunny Award” to the Avon Grove School District for having one of the most transparent government Websites in the country. Avon Grove’s Web site scored an “A” for transparency based on the Sunshine Review’s Transparency Checklist. This year, only one percent of the 5,000 government Web sites ranked by the Sunshine Review earned a Sunny Award.


AGHS Teacher Wins Heart of Learning Award
Tom Calvecchio , an emotional support special-education teacher at Avon Grove High School, was named the Avon Grove School District’s finalist for the 2010 Citadel “Heart of Learning” Award, and later was named the high school countywide winner of the Heart of Learning. >> More.

Engle Seventh-Grader Wins Shining Star Award Jairo Zamudio Torres won the 2010 Middle School Shining Star Award for Avon Grove School District.  Torres received a certificate of achievement, a trophy, and a coupon to open a $200 share certificate at Keystone FCU. Torres was nominated for the award by his mathematics teacher, Melissa Jackson.

   


All-State Softball Teams Announced
Lizzy Odren, an Avon Grove graduate from the Class of 2010, made Honorable Mention for All-State Softball. Odren signed November 18 to play Division I Softball for Lehigh University starting in Fall 2010. >> More.

Senior Ricardo Quintana Wins Shining Star Award
Avon Grove High School senior Ricardo Quintana is the well-deserving recipient of the prestigious 2010 Keystone Federal Credit Union’s Shining Star award. He received a $200 share certificate of deposit and a trophy from Keystone FCU. Winners include three students from each of the 12 Chester County public school districts and the Chester County Intermediate Unit. Quintana’s English teacher, Elizabeth Allen Fisher, nominated him for the award based on his dedication to excellence in her classroom.


AG Music Groups Earn Top Awards at Festival

The Avon Grove High School Music Department earned several top honors for outstanding performances on May 21 at the Music in the Parks festival and competition in Hershey Park. >>More.

AGHS Senior Wins Art Award for Sculpture
On May 8, 2010, at the Chester County High School Art Festival, Avon Grove High School senior Alexandra Kanzer was awarded the William A. Hirsh Excellence in Sculpture Award for her piece titled, “Let’s Eat.”

Golder Named to All-State & All-American for Boys Lacrosse Avon Grove High School senior Timothy Golder has been named All-State for Boys Lacrosse. The honor marks the first time in AG’s history that a boys lacrosse player has made all-state. Golder has also been named an All-American in Boys’ Lacrosse. Also a first in AG history. The Board of School Directors honored Golder on June 10 for these achievements, as well as for making All Chest-Mont MVP and for establishing a new record as Avon Grove High School's All-Time Points Leader for Boys Lacrosse.

Academic All-American for Boys’ Lacrosse
Avon Grove High School senior Patrick Brodie was named an Academic All-American for Boy's Lacrosse. The Board of School directors recognized Brodie for his achievement on June 10.

AGHS Student-Athlete receives Special Honor

Michael Jeffcoats, an Avon Grove High School senior, received the 2009-2010 Scholar-Athlete Award at the University of Villanova Connelly Center on May 5. >>More. The Avon Grove Board of School Directors recognized Jeffcoats for this honor on June 10.

AG Swimmer Makes His Mark at States
Andrew Blyskal, a junior at Avon Grove High School, placed 9th out of 32 swimmers in the 100 meter backstroke and 11th of 32 swimmers in the 200 freestyle at the PIAA State Championship Meet hosted at Bucknell University. Blyskal was also named a Scholastic All-American and Athletic All-American for the 2009-2010 season.

Six AG Seniors Play Valor Bowl All-Star Game
The following Avon Grove High School seniors played in the 2010 Valor Bowl game on June 2 at Conestoga Senior High School: Kyle Kush – senior – quarterback/defensive back; Jordan Harris – senior – running back/punter; Andrew Lowe - senior - offensive/defensive line; Wes Shoap – senior – linebacker; Ryan Samuels – senior – tight end/defensive end; Mike Jeffcoats – senior – offensive lineman (center)/defensive tackle.


AGHS Junior Makes Eagle Scout
Alec McCloskey, a junior at Avon Grove High School, made the rank of Eagle Scout on Feb. 17, 2010. Alec is a member of Troop 18, New London, PA, Boy Scouts of America, and is the son of Bonnie and Jim McCloskey of West Grove, PA. >> More.


Taylor Signs to Play Baseball at East Stroudsburg
Avon Grove High School senior Colin Taylor will play baseball for East Stroudsburg University on an athletic scholarship. Taylor participated in a signing ceremony in the high school auditorium on May 21. Coaches Tim Rector and George Allen attended, along with Taylor's teammates and Athletic Director Jim Connor. Golder Signs with Penn State to Play Lacrosse

Tim Golder, a current senior and four-year varsity lacrosse player at Avon Grove High School, signed a letter of intent in mid-November to attend Penn State University on a lacrosse scholarship. >> More.


Roland Signs with UNC-Asheville to Play Baseball
Avon Grove High School senior Dean Roland signed a letter of intent on Nov. 17 to play baseball at UNC-Asheville on scholarship.
