Make Good Nutrition a Life Long Mission

The Avon Grove School District Food Service Department will provide all students with the fuel their minds and bodies need in order to learn, by preparing and serving nutritious meals in accordance with the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) evolved from efforts to assist children in low-income households and was established under the National School Lunch Act signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. The program is monitored by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Department of Education and all menus must meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The NSLP is designed to provide students with approximately one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances. Menus are planned to limit calories from fat to less than 30% and less than 10% calories from saturated fat. A variety of grains, vegetables and fruits are available daily.

Each lunch menu consists of at least 5 food items from the 4 food components:

  • Meat/meat alternative
  • Grains/Breads
  • 2 servings of vegetables/fruits
  • Milk

Students must choose at least 3 of these components. They may choose 4 or 5 of these components. However, we encourage all students to choose all offered items.

Students must take full servings of the food items selected to count as a component.

All students are offered at least 2 entrée choices at each school. A variety of fruits and vegetables are offered as well; students may choose 2 with each meal. Milk, flavored, skim and low fat varieties are available everyday. Please review school menus for more information regarding specific offerings.
