Welcome to the home of the Avon Grove School District’s Social Studies Program!

Program Philosophy

The purpose of the Avon Grove Social Studies curriculum is to provide students with the understandings and critical thinking strategies needed to make informed decisions as responsible citizens of a diverse, interdependent world.

Curriculum Documents

The Avon Grove School District’s Social Studies curriculum is developed by classroom teachers of social studies, grades K-12, and administrators. The curriculum is grounded upon the Pennsylvania’s Academic Standards for Social Studies. The Pennsylvania Standards define Social Studies as four core disciplines from the social sciences: Civics & Government, Economics, Geography, and History. These concentration areas are not meant to stand alone but rather are considered interrelated fields.

The Planned Course Outline for the Social Studies curriculum is based upon the four core disciplines and grade level clusters (K-3, Gr 4-6, Gr 7-9, Gr 10-12). The following information is available on the Planned Course Outline:

  1. Pennsylvania standards for the core discipline
  2. Big Idea: Core concepts, principles, theories
  3. Enduring Understandings: Lasting understandings that involve the big ideas and give meaning to important facts
  4. Essential Questions: Key questions linked to enduring understandings and assessment

The Planned Course Outlines are also broken down into specific plans by grade level clusters at the elementary level and by courses at the secondary level. These more detailed documents include the specific knowledge and skills for each grade level.
