Standards Aligned Curriculum

Curriculum Framework & Documents

The Avon Grove School District Curriculum is developed by classroom teachers , grades K-12, and administrators. The curriculum is grounded upon the the Pennsylvania Standards.    The curriculum framework utilized specifies what is to be taught for each subject in the curriculum.   The curriculum framework include Big Ideas, Enduring Understandings, Essential Questitons, Knowledge, and Skills.

Curriculum Framework Definitions:
  • Big Ideas:  Declarative statements that describe concepts that transcend grade levels.  Big ideas are essential  to provide focus on specific content for all students.
  • Enduring Understandings:   Lasting understandings that involve the big ideas and give meaning to important facts
  • Essential Questions:  Questions specifically linked to the big ideas which frame student inquiry, promote critical thinking, and assist in learning transfer.
  • Knowledge:  Describe what students should know as a result of instruction specific to grade level.
  • Skills:  Describe what students should be able to do as a result of instruction specific to grade level.
Planned Course Outlines:

Planned Course Outlines (PCO) include the Pennsylvania content standards, big ideas, enduring understandings, essential questions, knowledge and skills by grade level.  The Avon Grove School District PCO's are approved by the school board.

Pacing Guides:
Pacing guides provide a curriculum map of the content area outlining recommended instructional units to be taught over the course of the school year.

Instructional Units:
Instructional units provide teachers with a recommended unit of study pertaining to a particular area within the content area.  Instructional units include content standards, big ideas, enduring understandings, essential questions, knowledge and skills pertaining to the  topic of the unit.   Recommended assessments along with instructional activities are included in the units.
