PA to Distribute Property Tax Relief Funds
Avon Grove School District was notified May 1, 2008, that the District is scheduled to receive a property tax reduction allocation of $2,672,324.33 from the Commonwealth’s Property Tax Relief fund. As a result, each of the 7,502 approved homestead/farmstead property owners in Avon Grove will receive the same reduction of $358 on their 2008-2009 school real estate taxes.
Board to Consider 2008-2009 Final Budget
The Avon Grove Board of School Directors is scheduled to consider adoption of the 2008-2009 Final General Fund Budget on June 12, 2008. The Board meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the AGIS Audion.

Student Services Department Seeks Parent Input
The Student Services Department is seeking parent/guardian input
on various programs as part of the strategic planning process. Input will be gathered through four, topic-specific electronic surveys, which parents/guardians can complete online. Please take a few mintues to respond. Responses will be analyzed and used to help shape the department's action plan.

Tech Fair & Science Exhibition Held April 10
About 300 students, parents and community members attended Avon Grove School District's annual Technology Fair & Science Exhibition on Thursday, April 10, 2008. Teachers and students staffed more than 50 exhibits. Visitors had a chance to see instructional technologies in action and got to try out numerous hands-on, interactiave displays. Board Recognizes Cheerleaders; HS Robotics
At the April 24 Board meeting, the Avon Grove School District Board of School Directors recognized the high school varsity cheerleaders and the high school robotics team for their recent achievements. Both groups demonstrated their talents and skills prior to the Board meeting.
AG Launches REACT to Serve Special Needs Teens
The Recreation Experience and Activity Club for Teens (REACT), launched in November 2007, is one of Avon Grove School District’s newest programs for teens with special needs. The student-centered club meets two or three times a month, providing opportunities for adolescents with Autism Spectrum diagnosis and similar needs to socialize with their high school peers after school hours.
Driver Places in School Bus Safety Competition
Ken Loux, a driver for Swish-Trans, Inc., of New London won third place in the conventional bus division at the 29th annual Chester County School Bus Safety Competition held at Cash High School and CAT Brandywine on Saturday, April 26. The competition tests school bus drivers’ knowledge of school bus safety rules and safety skills behind the wheel.

PLE Celebrates Music in Our Schools Month
To celebrate Music in Our Schools Month, two musical groups performed for students during several morning and afternoon sessions at Penn London Elementary School on March 26.
Students Collect Pennies for Patients
Penn London Elementary School students collected $1,633 in change to donate to the Pennies for Patients program. The PTA sponsored the activity. Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period, benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which funds blood cancer research, education and patient services. The collection drive ended March 14.
PLE Teams Compete in JFLL Expo in Delaware
Four teams from Penn London Elementary School participated in the Junior FIRST LEGO League competition January 19, 2008, at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. Each team earned an award for their efforts, which included a research project on alternative energies as well as designing and building a model using an open-ended LEGO building set. Principal Marie DiGiulio also awarded a "All-Star Player" ribbons to the 24 participating students. |

Poetry Palooza Yearlong Celebration @ AGIS
This year the AGIS PTA is supporting literacy enrichment with a yearlong celebration of poetry called Poetry Palooza. The Palooza will bring workshops, readings, displays, distinguished visitors and events to the school to demonstrate the beauty, whimsy and relevance of poetry in the everyday life of students, teachers and families.

Earth Day Service Project at Nazarene Academy
Fred S. Engle Middle School eighth-graders Timmy Zinzel (left), Sean Guyre (center), and Seth Moyer (right) spread mulch on one of the playgrounds at the Avon Grove Nazarene Academy preschool and kindergarten center in West Grove. The students were among 105 eighth-graders who weeded, mulched, washed windows and chairs, and assisted in the classrooms during an Earth Day-themed service project at the academy. This is the second year Engle students have participated in the activity.

Coaches vs. Cancer Invitational Challenge
Four Fred S. Engle Middle School student athletes participated in the Coaches vs. Cancer 4 on 4 Invitational Challenge on Friday, March 28, 2008. The multi-school basketball tournament was held at Saint Joseph’s University Alumni Memorial Field House in Philadelphia. Participants included students from schools in Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware counties. All proceeds from the tournament benefited the Philadelphia Chapter of Coaches vs. Cancer.

Avon Grove "Heart of Learning" Winner Named
Social Studies teacher Eric Schott has been nominated as a finalist for the Citadel Heart of Learning Award. More than 2,800 nominations were submitted. Mr. Schott will be recognized May 6 at The Citadel Heart of Learning Award Banquet at the Desmond Hotel in Malvern. The fifteen finalists will be honored that evening, and the overall winners in the elementary, middle and high school categories will be named.
Kevin Struempfler was selected from among many talented HS hockey players to represent "Team Philadelphia" at the Chicago Showcase. This is Kevin's second year
in a row being selected for this team. The showcase includes all-star teams composed of high school juniors and seniors representing more than 35 states, and attracts
scouts from NCAA DI, DIII, NHL and Junior Hockey. Team Philadelphia is composed of high school junior & senior hockey players in the Atlantic District from Pennsylvania, Delaware and NJ schools.
2 Make All-State Band; 1 All-State Orchestra
Carl Breuninger, grade 11, has been named to the All-State Orchestra on oboe, and both Kevin Hutter, grade 10, and Steven Sharp, grade 11, have been named to the All-State Band. Hutter plays baritone saxophone and Sharp plays trombone. Brueninger also made the Region VI Orchestra, District 12 Orchestra, and the District 12 Band earlier this year. Hutter and Sharp made the Region VI Band and District 12 Band, and Sharp also made the Region VI Orchestra and District 12 Orchestra. >> more. Winter Color Guard Wins First Place
The AGHS Winter Color Guard
won first place at Lampeter-Strasburg. After 11 weeks of competition, Avon Grove's Winter Color guard is ranked 2nd out of 35 schools. Congratulations to Michelle Adcock, Adam Albright, and the members of the Winter Guard for their amazing first season.
Four All-Stars to Play in 10th Annual Valor Bowl
Avon Grove High School student-athletes Lewis Espositio, Nicholas Clark, Eddie Maloney, and Kevin Price have been named to the 2008 South All-Star Team that will play in the 10th Annual Valor Bowl, scheduled Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Downingtown Area School District's Kottmeyer Stadium. Proceeds will benefit the Chester County Special Olympics. Learning About Aerodynamics using Fun Lessons
Three sections of Engineering Technical Visual Communications classes at Avon Grove High School recently participated in a basic aerodynamics project based on creating paper airplanes.
AGHS Hosts Two Teachers from Korea
The English, Foreign Language, and English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers at Avon Grove High School are hosting two teachers from Korea this week for the second half of a two-week visit. The teachers arrived at AGHS February 4 and will stay through February 15. |
