Technology Fair & Science Exhibition March 18 Please plan to attend Avon Grove School District’s annual Technology Fair & Science Exhibition, scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Avon Grove High School. Avon Grove students, parents, and community members are invited to explore instructional technology demos, interactive exhibits, and how-to technology sessions for parents. AGHS Teacher Wins Heart of Learning Award Tom Calvecchio , an emotional support special-education teacher at Avon Grove High School, was named the Avon Grove School District’s finalist for the 2010 Citadel “Heart of Learning” Award. Tim Morris, Director of Sales and Marketing for Citadel, and Caroline Malz, Marketing Specialist, presented the award to Calvecchio on March 10 following a surprise announcement at the school. Calvecchio's father, Tom Sr., mother, Susan, and sisters Ava and Marissa were on hand for the surprise announcement along with AGHS administrators, faculty, and staff. Citadel received a total of 2,200 nominations for 600 teachers throughout the county this year.

100th Day of School Feb. 5
Fourth-graders at Avon Grove Intermediate School dressed up as if they were centenarians to celebrate the 100th Day of School on Feb. 5. Teachers and students throughout the school celebrated the number 100 in unique ways, including participating in mathematics and language arts activities.

PLE Celebrates 100th Day of School Feb. 5
Penn London Elementary School students, faculty, staff, and administrators celebrated the 100th Day of School on Friday, Feb. 5. Administrators and staff began the day by singing "We've Been Counting" over the morning announcements. Students throughout the K-2 school participated in mathematics and language arts activities related to the 100th-Day theme. Morning and afternoon kindergarten students also made 100-Day Hats and listened to counting stories. Each kindergarten student brought in a plastic baggie containing 100 items, and classrooms displayed the items on bulletin boards.

AGIS Crowns School-level Spelling Bee Winner
Sixth-graders Keiva Brannigan and Aubrey Behm placed first and second respectively in Avon Grove Intermediate School's spelling bee final held on March 5. Brannigan will represent AGIS at the 2010 Chester County Spelling Bee scheduled March 11.

AGIS KMO Team Tops in State; 10th in Nation The Avon Grove Intermediate School fifth-grade Knowledge Master Open (KMO) team placed first in the state out of 14 teams and 10th out of 223 teams nationwide in the computer-based academic competition held Jan. 20 for fifth- and sixth-graders. >> More.
Eight AGIS Students Chosen for County Band Fest
Eight sixth-graders from Avon Grove Intermediate School were selected to perform in the 2010 Chester County Elementary School Band Fest scheduled Friday, March 5, at Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School. They are: Emily Lindsay and Julia O'Brien, trumpet; Mikala Moorech and Rachel Sabella, flute; Alex Gaydos and Cameron Kriz, clarinet; Collin Payne, trombone; and Aria Swanson, percussion. The band is comprised of many of the top second- and third-year instrumental music students in Chester County. The students will spend the day rehearsing as a band and in small ensembles. The evening performance, which is open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Engle Middle School Crowns Spelling Bee Winner
Seventh-grader Emma Tilton won the schoolwide spelling bee at Fred S. Engle Middle School.
Up, Up, and Away! Eighth-graders at Fred S. Engle Middle School recently launched hot air balloons made from tissue paper as the final activity for a science unit on meteorology. Students worked in teams to construct the balloons using just colored tissue paper and glue. The launch brought several lessons to life for students, including the science of thermal expansion, the kinetic theory of matter, and the concept of density.

Engle Students to Participate in Choral Fest
Six FSEMS students were selected to participate in the PMEA District 12 Middle School Choral Fest scheduled Friday, March 12 at Penn’s Grove Middle School in Oxford, Pa.
The Choral Fest is comprised of the top six middle school-aged choral students from each of the school districts in Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia Counties. The guest conductor this year is Dr. David DeVenney, a professor of music and director of the choral activities at West Chester University.
