Title I

Parent Involvement Policy

Philosophy

The Penn London Elementary School staff believes that parent involvement is important to the success of our students’ education. We further believe, that it is necessary to maintain open lines of communication between school and home to keep parents informed and involved. When schools and parents work together and communicate, children have a better opportunity to achieve at high levels. As a Title I school, Penn London Elementary encourages parent volunteerism and plans meaningful activities for parents and families.

Activities that foster home/school communication include:

1. Newsletters

  • Title I newsletters from the Title I Coordinator
  • PLE Voice – school newsletter
  • Regular newsletters from classroom teachers

2. Parent/Teacher conferences in November and March at the conclusion of the 1 st and 2 nd trimesters - including Title I coordinator for 2 nd graders and upon request for 1 st graders.

3. E-Mail and phone conversations, as needed.

4. Title I letter of eligibility including an explanation of the program.

5. Grade 2 - Goals sheets with skills to be taught 1 st and 2 nd trimester and progress sheets after 3 rd trimester.

Grade 1 – Goals sheets only.

6. IST process involving Title I coordinator and/or reading specialist for each Title I student referred to the Instructional Support Team.

7. Home School Pledge distributed at conferences in November or when Title I instruction begins.

Activities for parent involvement in student achievement include:

1. Back-to-School Nights –

  • School-wide
  • Title I

2. Technology Fair

3. Parent workshops which may include, but are not limited to:

a. Providing materials and training to help parents work with their child to improve their child’s achievement using reading strategies

b. Providing materials and training to help parents work with their child to improve their child’s achievement, such as literacy training and using technology.

c. Providing materials available for home use during the summer months.

  • Leveled books
  • Frog Family Fun Pack reading games
  • Books on tape

Parent Advisory Council - Title I parents will be invited to join the Penn London Elementary Title I Parent Advisory Council. The activities of the PAC include updating Title I policies and giving input on what works and what ideas/materials might improve services.

In order to include all parents, goals/progress sheets, RAH letters and calendars, eligibility letters, and parent evaluations are sent home in Spanish as well as English. Invitations for Parent Nights are sent home in Spanish. In addition, translators are available for these events.
