Placement For 11/12 School Year
April 28, 2011
Student placement for the 11/12 school year will be determined using the
following criteria:
• Brothers & sisters are placed in the same schoolhouse.
• Students are equally mixed by gender, race, & ability.
• Each class receives a heterogeneous mix of instructional levels.
• Students are placed so that their instructional needs may be met.
• Placements take into consideration the social & emotional
needs of each student.
• The principals, along with grade level teachers & counselors,
participate in this process.
Should you feel the need to communicate specific insights to the AGIS
administration and next year’s teacher, please put these thoughts
in writing. These insights can refer to a program, instructional grouping,
organizational pattern, learning style, or social & emotional needs.
Personal requests for specific teachers will not be honored. Address your
letter to the principals and return it right away to AGIS. The deadline
is May 13.
Students will receive notification of their 11/12 classroom placement

AGIS Activate News
April 28, 2011 Thanks to
the YMCA for sponsoring the Healthy Kids Day event over the spring break.
One of the activities was a 1 mile fun run. The AGIS house having the
most participation was our orange house. The YMCA will be offering an
outdoor pool party to all students in orange house for this effort! Information
from the YMCA will soon come home to those students. Way to go orange
house and thanks to Mr. Whitmer, one of our PE teachers, for his help
in coordinating things with the Y and AGIS.
AGIS also has a Girls On The Run Team that meets regularly here after
school. This activity is also sponsored by the YMCA and focuses on running,
self esteem, and community awareness. The girls will be competing in a
5k run on May 24th in Kennett and their training here at school will help
them be properly prepared for that 3.1 mile distance. What a great fitness
activity this is and we appreciate the support of their coaches Ms. Betsy,
Ms. Alexa, and two of our teachers, Ms. Midiri and Ms. Mitch.
In addition to fitness, the group also takes time to focus on community
as well. As part of their efforts the club is collecting items for children
that are in a local homeless shelter. There is a box in our lobby to place
your donations through next Friday, May 6th. Items they are seeking include
deodorant, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, combs, hairbrushes, new socks,
new underwear, and art supplies for children. If you have used books that
are in good condition those too will be accepted.
Kudos to the 24 girls in our club and the adults that are mentoring and
leading them!!!
MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS – Students Entering Grade 7
April 28, 2011 Attention
all 6th grade students interested in playing sports in the middle school
next year. Sports at the middle school are governed by the Pennsylvania
Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). PIAA requires each student
athlete to have a sports physical performed by a licensed physician after
June 1, 2011. This physical will be valid until May 31, 2012 (one school
year), requiring a parent recertification for each subsequent sport throughout
the year. It is recommended that if your child is interested in playing
a sport in the 2011-2012 school year that you make an appointment now
for your child’s physical to be performed after June 1st, as appointments
fill up fast. Without a valid sports physical on file at the middle school,
your child will not be eligible to play interscholastic sports.
Physical packets can be obtained from the main office of AGIS or FSE after
May 30th or can be printed from the middle school website at www.avongrove.org/fsems.
All completed packets should be returned to: Fred S. Engle Middle School,
Attention Jan Newman, 107 School House Road, West Grove, PA 19352, by
August 3, 2011. Football for in-coming 7th graders will start August 22nd.
Soccer, field hockey, and cheerleading will start the first week of school.
