National School Counseling Week

January 28, 2010 National School Counseling Week will be celebrated February 1-5. This year’s theme is “Celebrate School Counseling.” The purpose of the celebration is to focus public awareness on the unique contributions of the professional school counselors within the United States, the state of Pennsylvania, and in our school district.
Avon Grove Intermediate has four Master’s-level certified school counselors: Ms. Kristen Brown in Purple, Ms. Deborah Burns in Orange, Ms. Lori Travers in Red, and Ms. Susan Gill in the Blue house. These four professionals work every day to help create a climate in the school that is conducive to learning by offering guidance lessons in the classrooms, and teacher training to help classroom teachers understand the nature of children and bullying. They also provide individual and group counseling to students with particular needs and consulting services with parents and agencies on behalf of the children. Coordinating Career Days for all fifth and sixth graders and sponsoring the Ambassadors Program and Spirit Committees in each house are also ways our counselors contribute to the school environment.
Please take a minute to talk with your child about the various roles of the School Counselor.

From the Nurse's Office

January 14, 2010

Reminder For Sixth Grade Parents:
Pennsylvania school health law requires a sixth grade physical examination that includes a scoliosis screening. Please send in a copy of the physical that was done in the fifth or sixth grade to the nurse’s office as soon as possible. If your child has not had a physical in his/her 5th grade year or the current 6th grade year, please call your health care provider for an appointment and send in a copy of the report of the physical examination when completed.

Pennsylvania school health law has also mandated new immunization requirements for students entering the 7th grade in 2010/2011. If your child is in need of any of these immuniza-tions (Tdap, Menactra, or Varivax#2) you should have already received written notification from the school nurses. Please make sure to have your child’s updated immunization history sent in to school as soon as possible. Any 6th grade student who does not receive the required immunizations prior to the beginning of the 2010/2011 school year will not be permitted entrance to 7th grade.
