Picture Retakes- Wednesday, November 4

October 22, 2009
If you missed the first picture day or are not happy with your pictures, retake day is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4.
Retake day is provided for students who…
• Were absent on September 18
• Entered as new students after September 18
• Forgot their money or order envelopes, or
• Need a retake due to a problem or error. If so, remember to keep the class group picture and return the rest of the package to school on retake day.
If you want a refund and no retake, have your child give the rejected package to the photographer with a note of explanation and your name and address attached. Lifetouch will mail you a refund. Additional order forms are available in the office.

Top 10 Tips for Preventing the Spread of Flu

October 22, 2009

1. Keep your child home from school or day care when s/he is sick.
2. Allow your child to return to school only when fever-free for at least 24 hours (no longer having a fever without use of fever-reducing medicines.)
3. Cover your cough. Cough into your upper sleeve or into a tissue and discard properly.
4. Properly dispose of used tissues and other soiled items, and wash your hands after doing so.
5. Wash hands frequently and regularly, or use hand sanitizers when water is not readily available.
6. Regularly clean and disinfect areas and items likely to have frequent hand contact.
7. Contact your health care provider when your child or other family member is sick with the flu. (Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, and body aches.)
8. If you are not able to stay home with your child, plan ahead for how s/he will be taken care of when sick at home or if school is closed.
9. Have your child vaccinated against the flu every year.
10. Stay informed through www.health.state.pa.us, www.cdc.gov or www.flu.gov.

Citadel Heart of Learning Award 09/10

October 22, 2009 The Citadel Heart of Learning Awards, fondly referred to as the Academy Awards for Chester County teachers, is now accepting nominations for the 2010 awards. Nominations will be accepted until December 31, 2009.

In a joint collaboration, Citadel and the Chester County Intermediate Unit created the Citadel Heart of Learning Awards. The nationally recognized program was designed to honor and thank Chester County’s teachers while raising awareness of the impact that their hard work and dedication have not only on their students and the students’ families, but on the entire community.

Fifteen finalists, one public school teacher from each of the 13 public school districts in Chester County, one teacher from the Chester County Intermediate Unit, and one teacher from a Chester County non-public school which also includes charter and home schools, will be chosen from the nominations and will be recognized at the Citadel Heart of Learning Awards banquet held in the spring. Each finalist will receive $500 to use in their classrooms. From these 15 finalists, three winners (one high school, one middle , and one elementary school teacher) will be awarded with the Citadel Heart of Learning Award and an additional $1500 to use in their classrooms.

Additionally, this year two students will be awarded for their nominations. The students with the best written and video nominations will be recognized and awarded a $250 gift card at the May awards banquet.

Accompanist Needed

October 22, 2009 Are there any piano players out there? Mrs. Smith and Ms. Truitt are looking for someone to accompany their choirs for the Winter Concert on December 9. You would be needed for a few rehearsals during the school day, a school assembly, and the evening concert. If you are interested, please let us know!

Homework

October 22, 2009 Parents may request homework through the main office for students who are absent. The school needs 24-hours notice. Homework assignments will not be faxed to/from the school. More information is on pages 8 & 9 in the 2009-2010 AGIS Parent /Student Handbook.

Pre-Approved Absences

October 22, 2009 Requests for pre-approved absences must be made at least one week in advance of the absence and must be approved by the building principal. Notes, emails, etc, to the teacher in advance of the trip will not be accepted as advance notification.

Public Flu Shot Program

October 8, 2009 The Chester County Health Department will be coming to the Avon Grove High School offering traditional flu shots to the public, children and adults on Wednesday, November 4, 3:00-6:00PM.This will be a walk-in clinic with no pre-registration required. The cost for adults is $20.00. It is free for all students in K-12. (A parent/guardian must be present to sign a permission form.)

Do You Have Your Application In?

October 8, 2009 The deadline to apply for Free and Reduced Priced school meals is quickly approaching. If your child was in this program last year, you must still reapply every year. If you have not applied this year, you child will be charged full price for their meals as of the October 14th deadline.

Reminders to All Fourth Graders

October 8, 2009 Please return your private dental reports to the nurse’s office as soon as possible. Forms are available in the nurse’s office and the main office.

PAYS 2009

October 5, 2009 AGIS will be conducting the Pennsylvania Youth Survey on its 6th grade students on Thursday November 5th, 2009 in accordance with the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

Every two years, since 1989, Pennsylvania has conducted the Pennsylvania Youth Survey for their 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders to learn about their behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge concerning alcohol, drugs, and violence. AGIS’s 6th graders will be taking this survey in school on Thursday November 5th, 2009. Letters explaining the survey are being sent home with all of our 6th grade students and permission should be returned if you DO NOT want your child to participate. If you have any questions about this survey please contact our Student Assistance Coordinator, Miss. Kocher @ 484-667-4441.

Red Ribbon Week 2009

October 5, 2009 AGIS will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week during the last week of October, the 26th – 30th. Students will participate in activities to learn about the importance of being drug-free. On Monday October 26th every student will receive a red ribbon bracelet to wear throughout the week. There will be morning announcements made every morning educating the students on the importance of making healthy choices and living a drug-free life style. Every homeroom will be given a chain link to sign and the links with be joined together and hung in the cafeteria to show AGIS’s support in the fight against drugs and alcohol. There will be two voluntary contests: 3rd and 4th graders may participate in a song/poem contest and 5th and 6th graders may participate in a persuasive essay contest to win prizes. To finish off the week, Thursday October 29th will be red ribbon spirit day where the entire school will be able to show their school pride and support for the fight against drugs and alcohol by wearing red.
