A new transportation request form for alternate arrangements must be submitted every school year.
If your child will be regularly using a bus stop different from your home bus stop next year, even if it is the same arrangement as this year, you must put it in writing. Transportation Request Forms are available on our AGIS website and in the office at your request. It is necessary to have the name, specific address, and telephone number of your day care provider, as well as a clear explanation of the request, especially if there will be day variants.

Current notices were sent home on Friday, May 22. The last notification will be Friday, June 5. The last day that students will be permitted to charge purchases in the cafeteria will be Friday, June 5. Please do not wait until the last week of school to settle your accounts. In order to keep clearances active for next year, you must volunteer at least one time during the current school year. Otherwise you will have to re-apply for clearances next year. If you child is moving on to the middle school next year, your clearances will follow you.
Please make sure that you sign in under your name in the black notebooks at the receptionist’s desk each time you volunteer, including chaperoning trips.

Community Food and Clothing Drive, May 18-29

May 14, 2009 The school nurses at AGIS will be sponsoring a school-wide food and clothing drive to benefit The Bridge. The Bridge is a neighborhood volunteer organization that helps meet the physical needs of local families by supplying food and clothing at no cost to them. Items are distributed every Tuesday evening from a storage trailer located behind the Church of the Nazarene on State Road in West Grove. The Humanitarian Club of the Avon Grove High School is one group that supports the Bridge.
Our drive will take place from May 18 until May 29. In addition to gently used clean spring and summer clothing items for children and adults, we would like to suggest the following food items:
3rd graders – canned vegetables
4th graders – canned fruit, canned juice, juice boxes
5th graders – rice/pasta products/macaroni and cheese
6th graders – canned meats, boxed all in one meals
All donations can be brought to the nurse’s office between 8:10 and 8:30 AM and placed in the collection boxes. For each item received, a green cut-out of a leaf will be provided. The student can add his/her name and homeroom to the leaf and then add the leaf to our paper tree. As we watch our tree grow, we’ll “see” our students growing into a Community of Helpers.

Summer Draw to Write Classes

May 14, 2009 Summer Draw to Write classes will be held in Oxford at the Golden Light Wellness Center to help children in 1st through 6th grade with handwriting. Using drawing techniques to help improve handwriting, your child may improve:
• Print or cursive letter formation
• Attention to the details of writing and drawing
• Drawing skills and self confidence
• Self esteem
• Legibility of handwriting
These classes are designed to help children who are having difficulty learning print or cursive letters, having difficulty printing sentences or connecting the cursive letters, placing the letters on the line, or who have print/cursive that is not neat and is diffi-cult to read. Classes will focus on your child’s individual needs.
Help your child improve their handwriting legibility. It is great practice for the summer and a fun class!
Classes are taught by a Registered Occupational Therapist with more than 20 years experience working in various school districts in the area. For more information and an application form call 610-932-9511 or visit www.goldenlight.faithweb.com (Occupational Therapy Draw to Write Classes/Handwriting Clinic.)

School Bus Safety Tips for Parents and Students

May 1 , 2009 Spring has arrived, along with (mostly) warmer weather. At this time of year, it's natural to want to get outside and have fun. Students still need to be safe and stay alert, however, especially when waiting for the school bus and getting off the bus each day after school. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, transportation personnel and the public all play important roles in keeping children safe while on or around the school bus.
Please take a moment to review the following safety tips with children to help ensure our students arrive to and from school safely each day:

  • Get to the school bus stop 10 minutes ahead of the assigned pick-up time, so you won't have to run across the road to catch the bus.
  • When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic. Line up at least five giant steps away from the curb or the roadway to wait for the bus.
  • Never go near a stranger or a strange car, even if the person seems friendly, offers to give you something, or is asking for help. Always check first with a parent, guardian, or trusted adult before getting into a car with anyone. If a person's behavior makes you scared, uneasy, or upset, seek the help of a trusted adult right away and report the incident.
  • Never run after the school bus if it has already left the bus stop.
  • Never push when getting on or off of the school bus.
  • Always walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus when crossing so that the school bus driver can see you.
  • Be aware: Cross with Care! Wait until the school bus has stopped all traffic before stepping out onto the road.
  • When the school bus is moving, always stay in your seat. Never put your head, arms or hands out of the window.
  • Talk quietly; do not distract your school bus driver.
  • If your school bus crosses railroad tracks, be calm and quiet so that your driver can listen for a train. Always obey your school bus driver's instructions, so that he or she can make safe decisions.
  • Never play with the emergency exits. Backpacks, band instruments, or sports equipment may not block the aisle or emergency exits. If there is an emergency, listen to the driver and follow instructions.
  • When getting off of the school bus, make sure that all drawstrings and other loose objects are secure so that they don't get caught on the handrail or the door.
  • Never cross the street behind the school bus.
  • If you leave something on the bus or drop something outside of the bus, never go back for it. The driver may not see you and may begin moving the bus.
  • Follow the same rules about strangers when you get off the bus at your stop at the end of the day.
