Japanese Herb Is The Winning Word

February 28, 2008 Congratulations are extended to Kayla Dickens for winning Avon Grove Intermediate School’s Spelling Bee.  After competing with 39 other students from across the building through 8 rounds, Kayla correctly spelled “wasabi”  to out-spell her closest competitor, Jenna O’Brien.  The competition was well attended and occurred this past Tuesday.   Kayla now has the distinction of representing Avon Grove Intermediate School at the Chester County Spelling Bee on Wednesday, March 5th.  The Chester County Intermediate Unit in Downingtown hosts this annual event.  Kayla will be joining winners from 55 schools to vie for the National Spelling Bee competition in May in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations Kayla and Jenna! Your hard work and motivation has paid off.  Good luck at the county competition! »Read More

Birthday Celebrations

February 28, 2008 When bringing in treats for your child’s birthday, please keep in mind that teachers cannot host parties in the classroom. A simple healthy snack or small gift bag is appropriate. Due to new regulations by the state of Pennsylvania regarding food items in public schools, cupcakes and sweets are no longer considered appropriate items to send in to celebrate students’ birthdays. Please limit the treat to one item, and make sure that the teacher is aware that you will be providing that item. Thank you.

Be Aware and Prepared

February 28, 2008 Serious weather conditions or other emergencies may make it necessary to close school, delay the opening of school, or dismiss students early. Emergency information will be posted on the District web site and will be broadcast on the radio and television.  Please monitor these communication systems as needed.  You may also sign up for an electronic “News Flash” by visiting our Newsflash Page.
Due to the number of students that we serve, coupled with the need to immediately address the circumstances of an emergency situation, it is not possible to make individual phone calls to parents and/or guardians.  We ask that you do not call the school, as unnecessary phone calls will tie up our phone lines and personnel needed to deal with the emergency.
During dismissal, our school driveways and parking lots can become very congested.  School bus transportation is the safest means of getting our students home.  We encourage parents to have children use school bus transportation during inclement weather.  This way our roads, driveways, and parking lots will be less congested.
Please note that when school is cancelled, all after-school or evening programs or activities for that day are also cancelled.
(Breakfast is not served on delayed opening days.)

Unexpected Early Dismissals

February 28, 2008 In the event of an emergency school closing, students will be sent home on their school busunless they have a prearranged bus pass.  Students who had notes to be picked up at 3:00 will also be sent home on the earlier bus.  Please do not call or fax in requests for bus passes.
Your children need to know in advance what to do when they get home if you are not there.  Please discuss a “Plan B” with your children so they are confident and comfortable with plans due to unforeseen closings.
