AGIS PTA Holiday Gift Shop

November 29, 2007 In keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, the AGIS PTA will be sponsoring an AGIS Holiday Gift Shop.  This is an opportunity for children to shop inde-pendently of their parents, purchasing carefully chosen, inexpensive gifts for all members of the family with the help of PTA volunteers.  Gift-wrapping will be available for just 50¢ for each student’s total purchase.
This is not a PTA fundraiser.  It is a service offered to the students at AGIS.  A letter detailing when your child’s class will be visiting the shop will be coming home soon.
The Holiday Gift Shop will be open during school hours for all students in grades 3-6 from Monday, December 10 to Friday, December 14.
     We need volunteers to…
  • Price Merchandise and set up the shop the week of December 3
  • Work at the shop (cashier, gift wrap, etc.) the week of December 10.
If you would like to volunteer for this very fun event (it really is fun!) please email Betsy Beehler at betsybeehler@aol.com

Poetry Palooza

November 5, 2007 poetry_palooza

This year the AGIS PTA is supporting literacy enrichment with a year long celebration of poetry called Poetry Palooza. The Palooza will bring workshops, readings, displays, distinguished visitors and events to the school to demonstrate the beauty, whimsy and relevance of poetry in the everyday life of students, teachers and families.

WHAT MAKES A POETRY PALOOZA?

4th grade workshops - We are fortunate to have a talented team working with our fourth-grade students and teachers on a special poetry project. Reading Specialist Patti Hill and Master Teachers Joan Vick, Chris Bureau and Maria Kriznuski are delivering a 14 session in-class workshop to all 4th-graders. Students in red and blue schoolhouses are participating in the workshops now and spring workshops are scheduled for students in the orange and purple schoolhouses. Some comments from students currently working on poetry include:

In response to the question, "Has anyone learned anything about him/ her self as you hunt for a self-portrait poem?" one child said, "I learned that I really like poetry!"

In explaining why he chose a poem one student said, "I like to read on the beach more than any place else because the sound of the ocean calms me down."

Poet visit – In May, poet and author J. Patrick Lewis will visit our school and share thoughts about his work with our experienced 4th grade poets. Mr. Lewis has written over fifty children's books with forty of them being children's poetry.  In addition to being a college professor for thirty years in the field of economics, he has won numerous awards for his children's books including; the Golden Kite Award, 2002 Gold Book Award (National Association of Parent Publishers), and the IRA 2006 Teacher's Choice Award. (International Reading Association. He will engage small groups of 5th- and 6th-grade students in hands-on workshops and will share a special reading with our youngest 3rd-grade poets. Students will have the opportunity to purchase books for signing by Mr. Lewis. To learn more about J. Patrick Lewis, go to www.jpatricklewis.com.

Post-a-Poem - Watch for poetry postings around the school. We will be asking for contributions from the school community for favorite poems to share as postings around the school. Stop and take a minute to read something that will make you think, or maybe make you smile. Do you have a favorite poem you’d like to share? If so, please drop a note to Debbie Parker in the library.

Poetry readings during Wednesday morning announcements - Poetry is meant to be read aloud so we are inviting some of your favorite AGIS teachers and staff to read a poem during Wednesday morning announcements. Listen carefully and enjoy the imagery of the words. What does your mind’s eye see?

Links to poetry – Our librarians will be sharing poetry resources throughout the year with students and teachers and, on the website; we’ll be sharing links to recommended poetry sites for students and families.

If you have any questions about Poetry Palooza, please contact PTA volunteer Eileen Sparling at eileensparling@comcast.net or 610.345.1160.
