Parents/Guardians of Penn London and AGI students who ride the bus home:May 24, 2007 Please be advised that the school buses are running about one hour behind schedule for drop off today (May 24) because several busloads of AGI students returning from a field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo are stuck in traffic. The field trip buses are expected back at the PLE/AGI campus by about 4 p.m. today. AGI and Penn London students will then load the buses and be transported to their designated stops. This estimate is based upon the expected 4 p.m. return time for the field trip buses. AGI and PLE buses normally leave the campus between 3:10 and 3:20 p.m. for the afternoon run.
Summer ReadingMay 23, 2007
The end of the school year is quickly approaching. When planning your summer days, include lots of ways that summer reading can be an integral and fun component of your child’s day. Children can gain reading skills by keeping the reading habit alive. Library and bookstore trips can be browsing times when your child becomes familiar with many different types of reading materials. Road trips and Audio Books are a wonderful combination. Listening to a good book can make those miles fly by! The West Grove and Chester County libraries have extensive collections.
Independent summer reading should be interesting and enjoyable for your child. Magazines, joke books, how-to books, and even comic books get two thumbs up. Summer is prime time for reading stories together. Include stories you love, ones that may be too difficult for your child to read alone, or simply good books that interest both of you. A list of suggested summer reading is included. Encourage your child to choose informational books as well as fiction titles. Reading informational books can build your child’s background knowledge for the coming school year. Combining reading with hands-on activities will enhance understanding even more. Get ready to enjoy those lazy days of summer and make reading a summer habit. Remember to have your child pack some reading materials in the suitcase! Student placement for the 07/08 school year will be determined using the following criteria:
Brothers & sisters are placed in the same schoolhouse. Students are equally mixed by gender, race, & ability. Each class receives a heterogeneous mix of instructional levels. Students are placed so that their instructional needs may be met. Placements take into consideration the social & emotional needs of each student. The principals, along with grade level teachers & counselors, participate in this process. Should you feel the need to communicate specific insights to the AGIS administration and next year’s teacher, please put these thoughts in writing. These insights can refer to a program, instructional grouping, organizational pattern, learning style, or social & emotional needs. Personal requests for specific teachers will not be honored. Address your letter to the principals and return it right away to AGIS. The deadline is Friday, May 18. Students will receive notification of their 07/08 classroom placement in mid-August via mail. Transportation For Next YearMay 9, 2007
Planning bus routes for the 2007-2008 school year will soon be underway. All students will be assigned to their home bus stop for the coming school year, and current day care arrangements will be deleted. A new transportation request form for alternate arrangements must be submitted each new school year.
If your child will be regularly using a bus stop different from your home bus stop next year, even if it is the same arrangement as this year, you must put it in writing. Transportation Request Forms are available on our AGIS website and in the office at your request. It is necessary to have the name, specific address, and telephone number of your day care provider, as well as a clear explanation of the request, especially if there will be day variants. AGIS Raises Awareness About AutismMay 9, 2007 About 400 students in grades three through six at Avon Grove Intermediate School joined together on Friday, April 27, to form the shape of a giant autism awareness ribbon. The day was also a schoolwide spirit day to commemorate the end of Autism Awareness Month, which occurs annually each April. "The Bridge" Community Food DriveMay 9, 2007
The Bridge is a neighborhood volunteer organization that helps meet the physical needs of local families by supplying food and clothing at no cost to them. Items are distributed every Tuesday evening and Saturday morning from a storage trailer located behind the Church of the Nazarene on State Road in West Grove. The Humanitarian Club of the Avon Grove High School is one group that supports The Bridge.

Our drive will take place from May 14th until May 25th, 2007. In addition to gently used, clean spring and summer clothing items for children and adults, we would like to collect the following food items: 3rd graders – canned vegetables 4th graders – canned fruit, canned juice, juice boxes 5th graders – pasta products/rice/macaroni and cheese 6th graders – canned meats/boxed all-in-one meals All donations can be brought to school and placed in the collection boxes outside of the nurses’ office during the two weeks of the drive. If you have any questions, please call the AGI school nurses, Mrs. Dundon and Mrs. Lee, at 610-869-2010. Thank you in advance for your support.
