November 30, 2006 The fourth, fifth, and sixth grade choirs will be presenting their Winter Concert on Wednesday evening, December 13, at 7:00 PM in the AGIS cafetorium.  We will also be featuring a holiday performance by the second year flute ensemble. 

     We hope many of you will make plans to attend this special evening as we showcase the talents of our wonderful students and help you get in the holiday spirit!

November 30, 2006 AGIS children will have the opportunity to shop at school independently of their parents.  Gift items vary from $.25 to $8.50.  Gift-wrapping will be available for $.50 for each student’s total purchase.

November 30, 2006 If you are holiday shopping online at your favorite store, log onto Boxtops4education.com FIRST!  Check to see if your favorite store is listed and then click their icon in the Box Tops website and our school gets a donation based on your purchases.

     Homeroom moms, are you shopping at Oriental Trading for party favors?  If you visit the Box Tops website they will donate 6% of your purchase to the school.

November 16, 2006 AGIS is once again supporting the Avon Grove Christmas Basket Program.  This wonderful community program provides Holiday Baskets to over 300 needy families in the Avon Grove School District.  The collection of non-perishable food and personal care items will begin on Tuesday, November 28 and continue until Friday, December 8.

Please have your child place all donated items in the collection boxes by the nurses’ office.

     Thank you in advance for your support of the Avon Grove Christmas Basket Program.

November 16, 2006 Are there items missing from your child’s closet and drawers?  When you come for your child’s conference, please stop by the Lost & Found, located in the cafeteria hallway near the faculty dining room, and see if your property can be located within our collection.  Any items left after conferences have concluded will be donated to a local charity.

     Special thanks to our Red House Ecology Club who continues to painstakingly organize the collection onto tables designated small, medium, and large.

November 16, 2006 If you placed an order this fall from our Kathryn Beich and Otis Spunkmeyer brochure, you may pick up your order in our school cafeteria today from 3:00-7:00 PM and tomorrow, November 17, from 1:00-4:00 PM.  The orders will be arranged by schoolhouse color, then by teacher name.  The cookie dough will be in another part of the cafeteria to maintain temperature.  We have extra cookie dough available for sale!!!

     Please make arrangements with Christine Stewart (610-869-6228) if you cannot pick up your order on the scheduled dates.

November 16, 2006 We would like to thank everyone who volunteered to make our Spooky Family Fun Night such a success!  We especially want to thank the faculty members who generously gave their time:  Mrs. Betty Sharon, Mrs. Roseann Dundon, Mrs. Suzanne Fetterman and family, and Mrs. Jill Benjamin who carved a beautiful pumpkin for a door prize.

     We must also thank the local businesses that donated to our event:

November 15, 2006 The AGIS PTA will be hosting a visit from author Jen Bryant in early January.  She is the author of numerous biographies for young readers, picture books, and poems. She teaches Writing and Children’s Literature at West Chester University and lives in Glenmoore, PA with her husband and daughter. You can learn more about this author at her website, www.jenbryant.com.
 
Ms. Bryant will be discussing her book, The Trial, with 5th and 6th graders.  In addition to The Trial, her books include: Georgia’s Bones, Pieces of Georgia, Call Me Marianne, and Music for the End of Time.  Books will be available for purchase prior to Ms. Bryant’s visit, and she will sign books during her visit.  Watch for order forms coming home at the end of the month.  For more information, please contact Eileen Sparling.

November 9, 2006 All Avon Grove schools will dismiss early and teachers will have conferences with parents on Friday through Wednesday, November 17-22. Avon Grove Intermediate School students will be dismissed at 1:05 PM.  Lunches will be served.

Please note, breakfast is not available on early dismissal days.

Conference schedules were sent home on Monday, November 6.  Please plan to arrive in enough time to get to your child’s room before your scheduled conference time.  If you cannot keep your appointment, please call the school or notify the teacher right away.

November 14, 2006 Students of the Red School House have been earning free equipment by participating in the Funding Factory Recycling Program. They collect empty laser and inkjet cartridges and used cell phones from the community and send the waste products to FundingFactory in exchange for their choice of technology and recreation products, or even cash.

Companies interested in demonstrating a commitment to education and the environment can participate free of charge in the FundingFactory Business Support Program. FundingFactory will send each supporting business free, postage-paid shipping boxes for the return of collected cartridges and cell phones. By donating to AGIS, businesses help us earn equipment.

Community and business supporters can send cartridges and cell phones to Mrs. DiDomenico's classroom.

At the end of the 2005-2006 school year, the report card committee met to review our report card.  The committee’s recommendations resulted in some changes to the current report card. Revisions were made to the grading of the Lifetime Characteristics, the aligning of reading instructional levels to our current reading series, and the condensing of language arts and mathematics benchmarks. 

     Parent conferences are held after the first two trimesters, therefore written comments will be provided only on the last trimester report. 

     You may review the revised report card HERE on our website. Report cards are scheduled to go home with your students on Wednesday, November 15.

AGIS will join in the celebration of National Children’s Book Week the week before Thanksgiving, November 13-17.  Different activities are planned throughout the week to celebrate our love of reading.

• Monday, Nov 13, will be Buddy Reading Day.
• Wednesday, Nov 15, will be Guest Reader Day.
• Friday, Nov 17, will be Read Me Day and SSR (Silent Sustained Reading.)  Each schoolhouse will set a time to drop everything and read.
• Also, each day a fifth or sixth grade student will give a “book talk” during morning announcements.

     Please join in the fun and celebrate reading!

November 9, 2006 Looking for a great way to "recycle" your used children's books? The AGIS PTA is organizing a Used Book Drive. The goal of this service project is to build our classroom teachers' libraries; enabling us to get more books into the hands of our students. We will be collecting used (or new) children's books during the dates below:

• Please send in books from Monday, Nov. 13-Tuesday, Nov. 21.
• We will have collection boxes in the lobby as well as in each schoolhouse.
• We prefer books at the 3rd-6th grade level, but we'll gladly accept children's books of all levels. Readers at every level will benefit from your generosity.
• Leftover books will be offered to the PLE teachers and Reading Specialsits a well as the Avon Grove Library for their community outreach programs.

November 9, 2006 Our next Market Day sale date has changed.  Instead of having our sale on Wednesday, November 29, we have switched it to Thursday, December 7.  The pick up time will be 4:30-5:30 PM.

     The 15th annual Country Christmas will be Saturday, December 2, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at AGIS.  This annual community event features nearly 100 crafters, classroom basket raffles, entertainment, food, and lots of fun for the entire family.  We need volunteers to help for one hour during the day.  This event is sponsored by both the PLE and AGIS PTA’s with all profits going to student programs for both schools.

November 9, 2006 As the weather gets colder, the needs of our families change, and as a school community we are responsible for recognizing these needs.  If you know of any family that could use assistance, or notice any child that might not have warm clothes, or is frequently hungry, please let me know.  There are plenty of resources in Chester County, from heating assistance to food banks that are easily accessed. I know it is hard to discern who is in need - we can only do our best!  Thank you for your help.

November 9, 2006 There are only two SCRIP Shopping Card order opportunities before Christmas. The due dates are Tuesday, November 14, and Monday, December 11.  We must receive all SCRIP orders by 11 AM on each due date.  Please remind your child to turn in your SCRIP order form first thing in the morning so it can be sent to the office.  We encourage you to send your order in early to ensure that we receive it on time.

November 9, 2006 We are putting the finishing touches on the directory, and hope to distribute them to all PTA members within a couple of weeks.  If you would like to join the PTA for $8 and guarantee your copy, contact Louann Larkin.

October 5 , 2006 The Special Education department is sponsoring a workshop on Homework and Organizational Tips on November 2nd @ 6:30 at AGIS Audion. Although this is sponsored by the Special Education department, all are welcome.
