Clearances For Parent Volunteers

May 30, 2006

If a parent volunteer has obtained valid Act 34 and Act 151 clearances during the 2005-2006 school year, and has volunteered in any capacity in the  Avon Grove School District during the 2005-2006 school year, their clearances will remain valid for the 2006-2007 school year, and can be used at any school during the year. Volunteering at any Avon Grove school at least once during the school year maintains the validity of the clearances.

The Avon Grove School District will reimburse the cost of the clearances one time only; if a volunteer obtained reimbursement for clearances, but did not volunteer during the 2005-2006 school year, and therefore needs to obtain new clearances, the volunteer will not be reimbursed a second time.

Summer Reading

May 22, 2006

The end of the school year is quickly approaching, bringing the joys of summer vacation nearer.  When planning your summer days, include lots of ways that summer reading can be an integral and fun component of your child’s day.  Children can gain rather than lose reading skills by keeping the reading habit alive.  Library and bookstore trips can be browsing times when your child can just look at all different types of reading materials. Road trips and books on tape/cd are a wonderful combination. Listening to a good book can make those miles fly by! The West Grove and Chester County libraries have extensive collections.

Independent summer reading needs to be interesting and easy for your child.  So don’t hesitate to allow them to read books you might think are too easy.  Magazines, joke books, how to books, and even comic books get two thumbs up.  Summer is prime time for reading stories together. Include stories you love, ones that may be too difficult for your child to read alone, or simply good books that interest both of you.

A list of summer reading is included, as well as the topics for social studies and science units next year.  Encourage your child to choose informational books as well as fictional books.  Reading informational books can build your child’s background knowledge.  Combining readings with hands-on activities will enhance understanding even more.

At the beginning of next year, your child will have an opportunity to share what they have read over the summer with their peers.  So get ready to enjoy those lazy days of summer and remember to have your child pack some reading materials in the suitcase!

Enjoy,

Placement For 05/06 School Year

May 4 , 2006

Classroom placement is handled in each of the schoolhouses using the following criteria:

  • Brothers & sisters are placed in the same schoolhouse.
  • Students are equally mixed by gender, race, & ability.
  • Each class receives a heterogeneous mix of instructional levels.
  • Students are placed so that their instructional needs may be met.
  • Placements take into consideration the social & emotional needs of each student.
  • The principals, along with grade level teachers & counselors, participate in this process.

Should you feel the need to communicate specific insights to the AGIS administration and next year’s teacher, please put these thoughts in writing.  These insights can refer to a program, instructional grouping, organizational pattern, learning style, or social/emotional needs.  Personal requests for specific teachers will not be honored.  Address your letter to the principals and return it to AGIS as soon as possible, or by Monday, May 15.

Students will receive notification of their classroom placement in mid-August via mail.
