"Don't Be An Ostrich"

December 21, 2005

“Don’t Be An Ostrich!” All parents are invited to hear one of the most well regarded speakers in the area talk about the warning signs of substance abuse. The Fred S. Engle Middle School PTO and Avon Grove’s Student Assistance Program are sponsoring a parents’ night on January 23, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fred S. Engle Middle School cafeteria. The speaker, Debra Delp, has her degree in nursing and social services, but her real experience comes from how drugs and alcohol have personally affected her life. The program provides parents with information about how to talk to their children about drugs and alcohol, how to identify if their child is using, and what they and their family can do about it. There will be a wide range of information to read and take home as well as tasty refreshments!
Every parent will be faced with issues surrounding drugs and alcohol at some point in their child’s life; we would like to help them prepare! Admission is Free!

January 23, 2006 from 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Local Author Visits 5th and 6th Grade Students

December 10, 2005

On November 1st and 2nd, local illustrator and children’s author Judith Byron Schachner, visited the fifth and sixth graders of Avon Grove Intermediate School. Mrs. Schachner has written and illustrated many books including Skippyjon Jones, Yo Vikings, I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, and Mr. Emerson’s Cook. Mrs. Schachner’s humorous and very inspirational presentations included slides of her studio, animals, and artwork. She also shared her “seed box” where she gets her story ideas. Mrs. Schachner’s visit was enjoyed by all who attended her presentations and was a great segue into Children’s Book Week at AGIS the week of November 14, 2005.

Weather Cancellations

December 10, 2005

Serious weather conditions or other emergencies make it necessary to close school, delay the opening of school, or dismiss students early. In any one of these cases, announcements will be made on local radio stations, Philadelphia television stations, and our district web site. Avon Grove’s emergency closing number
is #859.

In the event of an emergency school closing, students will be sent home via the school bus. Our children need to know what to do when they get home in the event that you are not home to greet them. Please discuss the appropriate arrangements with your child prior to any unforeseen emergency situation.
Due to the number of students that we serve, coupled with addressing circumstances of an emergency situation, it is not possible to make individual phone calls to parents and/or guardians. Emergency information will be posted on the District web site and will be broadcasted over the radio and television. Please monitor these communication systems as needed. We ask that you do not call the school, as unnecessary phone calls will tie up our phone lines and personnel needed to deal with the emergency.
During dismissal, our school driveways and parking lots can become very congested. School bus transportation is the safest means of getting our students home. We encourage parents to have children use school bus transportation during inclement weather. When school is cancelled due to bad weather or other emergencies, each day missed will be made up by adding the day to the end of the school year in June.
Please note that when school is cancelled, all after-school or evening programs or activities for that day are also cancelled.
