On
June 14, the 5th and 6th graders enjoyed the First Annual
Grovy Awards. Classes were awarded "Grovies"
for their entries in the "Putting on the Glitz"
music video activity. Congratulations to Mrs. Ripkey's
class who won first place for 5th grade entries and Mr.
Yohannan's class who won first place for 6th grade entries.

Our annual field day took place on Friday, June 4th.
Students in the entire school took place in activities
such as the Flyers Hocky relay, 50-yard dash, sack race,
marathon, and tug-a-war.

Our last Spirit Day was "Hat Day" and "Flyers"
day. Students from Mrs. Marinelli's class showed their
spirit!

On Friday, April 30th all of our students participated
in an Awareness Walk on the school grounds. The walk combined
the ACES walk (All Children Exercising Simultaneously)
and the Autism Awareness Walk. Thank you for helping AGIS
celebrate Autism Awareness Month and ACES!

The PTA sponsored their first annual "Muffins For
Mom " breakfast here at AGI the week of May 10th.
Each day a different house was featured. The purpose of
the event was to emphasize and celebrate the importance
of moms' involvement in their child's education.

On May 10, 2010, third and fourth grade students at AGIS
kicked off National Children’s Book Week with "Dr.
Seuss Day". Opening ceremonies included a musical
visit by “The Cat in the Hat” and an informative
talk by “Dr. Seuss” himself. Students continued
the celebration throughout the day by participating in
various learning activities in their schoolhouses. At
the closing ceremonies each classroom received an award
for their themed door decoration. The day came to a Seusstacular
end with all students joining in the “Green Eggs
and Ham” dance.

March 14th was PI Day (3.14 part of the formula to find
the circumference of a circle). This year we celebrated
PI day on April 23, 2010. This was an exciting day for
the 5th and 6th grade students since they study circles
in math. One goal for the day was to bring fun back into
the math classroom, and across the student’s day
to understand that math is everywhere.

After reading the story, "The Kid's Invention Book,"
students were encouraged to think of a problem that they
would want to fix. From their ideas, they came up with
inventions. Inventions fixed a problem or simply made
life better. Students wrote a persuasive paper telling
about their inventions. Then, they made a model and a
poster. Last, they invited parents and friends to come
to their convention where they displayed their inventions.

AGIS Students participate annually in the Wilmington
Blue Rocks Reading Challenge. The challenge this year
was to read a minimum of eight books from January to March.
Each student who successfully completed the Challenge
was rewarded with two complimentary tickets to a Blue
Rocks’ game on May 1st. Although the Blue Rocks
did not win, the students were treated to a high scoring
game with plenty of special moments including two homeruns!

In honor of Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, 2010 sixth
grade students in orange schoolhouse participated in various
activities to promote awareness of the effects that each
individual has on our environment. As a culmination to
the days activities students were divided into groups
to maintain, repair and explore the school's nature trail.

picked up trash on the playground. They also
dressed up as "Careers" if they didn't get to
take the day off because of "Take Your Child to Work"
day.

DAD (Disability Awareness Days) took place on April 15-16.
During physical education classes there were presentations
and activities about disabilities to increase awareness
and respect for others.

Nearly 400 Chester County elementary, middle and senior
high school students participated in the 21st annual Chester
County Shakespeare Festival recently, and students from
Avon Grove's three participating schools were recognized
for outstanding performances, including several individual
awards, group awards, a scenery award and direction award.

This March the Avon Grove Intermediate Art Department
held a Mini-Masterpiece Exhibit to celebrate Youth Art
Month. Participating students chose their favorite artist
and recreated their favorite art piece in miniature. The
Mini-Masterpiece Exhibit is on display for the month of
March outside the library. Participants, parents and administrators
were invited to an opening celebration last Friday where
students shared why they chose their artist, enjoyed some
snacks and had their pictures taken. Great job artists!

Eight AGIS Students Chosen for County Band Fest
Eight
sixth-graders from Avon Grove Intermediate School were
selected to perform in the 2010 Chester County Elementary
School Band Fest on Friday, March 5, at Tredyffrin-Easttown
Middle School. They are: Emily Lindsay and Julia O'Brien,
trumpet; Mikala Moorech and Rachel Sabella, flute; Alex
Gaydos and Cameron Kriz, clarinet; Collin Payne, trombone;
and Aria Swanson, percussion. The band was comprised
of many of the top second- and third-year instrumental
music students in Chester County. The students spent
the day rehearsing as a band and in small ensembles.
They then performed in an evening concert.

Spelling Bee
The AGIS spelling bee champion Keiva and runner up Aubrey
take a moment to pose with our school's spelling bee coordinator,
Mrs. DiDomonico. Keiva will be representing AGIS at the
Chester County Spelling Bee on March 11th.


Knowledge Master Open
Our 5th grade AT students recently placed first in the
state of PA and 10th out of 223 teams nationally in their

The PTA sponsored their first annual "Donuts for
Dads" breakfast here at AGI the week of January 26th.
Each day a different house was featured. The purpose of
the event was to emphasize and celebrate the importance
of dads' involvement in their child's education. Over
400 children and parents participated during the week.

Our January Spirit Day was "Favorite Sports Teams"
day. Students and staff showed their spirit!

Rotary Donates Dictionaries
The West Grove Rotary Club presented all AGIS dictionaries
as part of the club's literacy project.

Geology Presentation
Students from Ms. King’s and Ms. Fogel’s
classes enjoyed a great geology lesson with the help of
a parent presentor who is a working geologist.

Happy Birthday Dr. King
Students from grade 4 blue celebrated the life of Dr.
Martin Luther King on his birthday by listening to literature
and information about his life and creating this giant
birthday cake in his honor!


T-Shirt Winners
These happy students were winners of the t-shirt drawing
conducted by our nurses’ office. All students that
donated food and personal care items for our holiday collection
project were entered into the drawing. One winner from
each school house was selected on morning announcements.

AGSD Schools Conduct Holiday Food Drive
Students and families from Avon Grove Intermediate School
(AGIS), Penn London Elementary School (PLE), Avon Grove
High School, and Fred S. Engle Middle School donated thousands
of canned goods, boxed foods, and personal care items
for the Avon Grove Holiday Basket Program. Members of

Day" in honor of Veterans' Day being this month.

Mrs. Cole’s 4th graders filled their classroom

Summer Reading Awards

summer reading awards! Over 900 students at AGIS met their
summer reading goals!

Fall Map Testing
All AGIS students took their Fall Map Tests in September,
and have set growth goals for the year!


YoJo Assembly
YoJo came to visit AGI about ways to keep our school
