Question and Answer Session

On November 10, 2005 there was a Question and Answer Session.    We have recorded responses by State Representative Art Hershey, State Representative Chris Ross and House Education Committee Executive Director, Dave Dumeyer, to the Avon Grove School District Administration's questions regarding Pennsylvania's implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act at the November 10, 2005, School Board meeting.

Charter School Law

The Charter School Law, 24 P.S. §17-1701-A et seq., was first enacted by the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1997.  While initial charter applications, renewals and annual reporting are procedures involving the local public school district, the primary responsibility for the success or failure of a charter school rests with the board of trustees, administration and staff of the charter school itself.  In this regard, charter schools are largely self-managed.  Public school districts such as the Avon Grove School District do not have day-to-day management responsibility or control over a charter school.  Charter school funding is mandated by the Pennsylvania Charter School Law, and not by individual public school districts.  In addition, some charter schools, known as “cyber” charter schools, are approved directly by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  For more information on charter schools, view the Pennsylvania Department of Education website at www.pde.state.pa.us .

Attention Volunteers: Revision to Board Policy #916
“Effective July 1, 2005, building level administrators are responsible for ensuring that all volunteers having direct contact with children shall undergo and complete criminal background and child abuse clearance checks prior to serving. Such clearances are to be maintained by the principal at each school. Volunteers shall be reimbursed for the cost of these clearances, i.e., $10.00 for the Act 34 clearance, $10.00 for the Act 151 clearance, and $24.00, if necessary, for the FBI clearance) after filing appropriate receipts. The clearance requirement shall not apply to a volunteer for a single event where the volunteer will have no contact with children other than under the direct supervision and in the physical presence of district staff."

Fred S. Engle Middle School

“Don’t Be An Ostrich!” All parents are invited to hear one of the most well regarded speakers in the area talk about the warning signs of substance abuse. The Fred S. Engle Middle School PTO and Avon Grove’s Student Assistance Program are sponsoring a parents’ night on January 23, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fred S. Engle Middle School cafeteria. The speaker, Debra Delp, has her degree in nursing and social services, but her real experience comes from how drugs and alcohol have personally affected her life. The program provides parents with information about how to talk to their children about drugs and alcohol, how to identify if their child is using, and what they and their family can do about it. There will be a wide range of information to read and take home as well as tasty refreshments!
Every parent will be faced with issues surrounding drugs and alcohol at some point in their child’s life; we would like to help them prepare! Admission is Free!
