2008-2009 Summer Reading Lists Webpage

June 2008

Dear Parents and Students,

Below you will find the list for the required summer reading for the 2008-2009 school year.  As a department, we believe in keeping our students’ minds active and engaged year-round.  Each list is designed by grade level to parallel the themes, topics, and issues discussed in the curriculum.

Books have been selected to appeal to a wide range of reading abilities and interests.  Some are suited for more mature readers and parental discretion is advised.  Please complete the attached consent form if you choose to read a mature book.

We request that the students choose to read books they have never read before; we also request that the students not watch any film versions that might exist, except when directed to do so.  Our hope is that parents and students together can choose books that will excite and encourage reading over the summer months.

During the first week of school, each student will take a written exam over the required reading.  Therefore, students are encouraged to record notes about elements of the book they want to remember.  Such notes might include chapter summaries, character descriptions, and examples of instances where literary devices such as symbolism, irony, and figurative language are employed.  These notes may then be used when taking the test.  All notes brought into class must be original and handwritten and will be turned in along with the completed exam.

The English Department expects that all reading and assignments will be completed upon return to school. Please read your assignment page and follow the directions carefully. We thank you in advance for your support and encouragement.

Enjoy your summer – we look forward to the exciting year to come!

Sincerely,

The AGHS English Department
