What is SAP?
SAP is a process that helps students who are experienceing problems that interfere with learning, such as depression, emotional trauma, peer conflict, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Students are connected to existing school services and/or community resources that will help the student overcome their problems. Avon Grove refers to its Student Assistance Program as SOS to honor its misssion of "Supporting Our Students."
What is the SOS Team?
The Avon Grove High Schol's SOS Team is typically composed of six to eight people, usually with representation from classroom teachers, administration, guidance counseling, content mastery, ESL/bilingual, special education, reading specialists, nurses, and coaches.

How Are Students Referred to the SOS?
Fellow students, staff, parents, community members, and students themselves can refer a student. All referrals are kept strictly confidential. Contact a guidance counselor, SAP team coordinator, or any member of the SOS team to make a referral.
What Happens After an SOS Referral?
- The SOS Team gathers data, such as grades, attendance, discipline referrals, and classroom teacher observations to determine if there is a significant problem.
- With parent permission, an interview with teh student may be scheduled.
- This screening results in a plan of action. the student is often referred to school resources such as guidance counselor, mentoring, tutorials, etc.
- Some students may receive a referral for an evaluation for possible special education services.
- At times, the problem is beyond the scope fo the school and the parents are given information about community-based services.
What Types of Problems Should I Refer?
If you know someone experienceing any of the following problems, please refer them to SOS. Remember, all referrals are kept confidential.
- Academic decline
- Depression
- Thoughts of hurting themselves
- Thoughts of hurting others
- Substance abuse
- Eating issues
- Family problems
- Running away
- Stressed/over-worked
