Great Books

Do you like to read? Do you wish you could meet with like-minded people who share your love of reading and with whom you could discuss great books? The AT department would like to remind you of our Great Books Seminar. This is a semester class (.5 credit) offered to AT students in both Fall and Spring semesters. We come together to read and discuss great works of literature.

Philosophy through Literature

Have you ever found yourself pondering the great philosophical questions? Do you like to read about and discuss philosophical ideas? If so, sign up for the new semester course, Philosophy through Literature. In this course, students are introduced to a historical overview of philosophy as it is presented in several works of literature. Students will study a variety of Western philosophers from Ancient Greece through contemporary times. Also included in the study are the philosophers of Asia - Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. This course is offered both Fall and Spring semesters. Listen to a podcast of one of the discussions from last year. Podcast

Film and Literature:
From novel to "Lights, camera, action!"

Both film and literature share the art of storytelling, and because films tell a story, they can be read as literature. This course will emphasize the ways in which film and literature handle such storytelling elements as point of view, plot, allusion, setting and characterization. Students will become familiar with film genres and with the elements of film discourse, and they will learn how films are made and follow film development from the late 1800's to the present. Students willl become more knowledgeable readers and viewers and will develop the habits of analysis, criticism, understanding, and appreciation of film in a disciplined and creative manner.

New! Shakespeare Seminar

Did you know that William Shakespeare wrote over 30 plays? In this seminar, we will read several (and perform a few!) of Shakespeare’s plays rarely covered in the traditional classroom. A sampling of his plays we will enjoy include Cymbeline, Titus Andronicus, Richard III, Henry V, Antony and Cleopatra, Troilus and Cressida, King Lear, The Tempest, Othello, Twelfth Night, Love’s Labours Lost and All’s Well That Ends Well. Students enrolled in the seminar course will earn .50 credit. Hope to see you there!
