National Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15
National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 - October 15. The roots of the celebration go back to 1968. Activities and events are held nationwide to recognize contributions of Latino Americans to the United States and to celebrate Latino heritage and culture. September 15 was chosen as the start date because it marks the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day is October 12.
